Circa 1890. DANCING AT THE RACES.
Sean-nos dancing in the square in the late 1800s. The thatched two storey building was a shop was owned by Tom Toole from Leam. His family owned the famous Connemara Pony ”Cannonball “ .Cannonball beat the M.G.W. steam train in a race from Oughterard to Leam.
Keogh’s Grocery shop stands on the site today. To the right is Bernard Egan’s Victuallers Shop 1901 (present day Fuchia Gift Shop)
To the left of Tooles lived a widow, Bridget Walsh (now Henry Keoghs)
Next was a widower Michael Walsh. ( Monaghans today)
The furthest down thatched house was a shop in 1901 owned by Thomas Halloran. It corresponds to where Kenny’s Shop (Tim Molloys) is today.
